Why You Should Have All-Season Tyres If You Are Not Using Winter Tyres

all-season tyres

If you live in an area where you will experience severe winter, you should have winter-approved tyres on your car. It is not safe to drive a vehicle that doesn’t have tyres that have been approved for winter driving when you have harsh winter conditions. Optimally you would use winter tyres that you mount on your vehicle once the winter is approaching. You also have the option to use all-season tyres for the whole year and then skip changing between the tyres.

Some people may not know that the tyres that have not been approved for winter use will get hard when the temperature drops below freezing. A hard tyre is not giving you the properties that you expect from a tyre. You will not get the needed traction when you drive on icy or snowy surfaces. So, even if it is not yet snowy outside, you should already install winter-approved tyres when the temperature drops close to freezing. The best time to change is once the temperatures start approaching 7°C, as that is when the winter tyres become superior even though there are no real winter conditions. The only reason is that the summer tyres start turning hard, while the winter tyres will remain soft.

If you do not have both a set of winter tyres and a set of summer tyres and change the tyres between the summer and winter, you should consider a winter approved all-season tyre. This will give you a compromise of both a good summer tyre and a good winter tyre. You will always be better off having real winter tyres if you have harsh winter conditions, but you will be fine with the All-season tyre if you don’t. The all-season tyres are approved for winter use and are therefore much better than having summer tyres on your vehicle when the snow first arrives.

The advantages of having an all-season tyre are that you are always ready for winter or whatever weather you will face. So by taking this route, you are always ready to drive and never have to leave the car behind. Ensure that you select a high-quality premium tyre as you will need it during the snowy, slushy and icy conditions. It isn’teasy to develop tyres that can handle both summer and winter weather, so you will need to ensure that the tyres you select rate highly among the top all-season tyres available on the market. Also, f course, we will need to have the proper winter approvals by having the 3PMSF-symbol on the sidewall of the tyres.

Since you are not alternating between summer and winter tyres, your tyres will remain all year round. You would still need to visit your tyre service station for them to check the condition of your tyres and have them rotate the tyres so that you even out differences in wear. This should be done more frequently if you have an electric car or hybrid.
